The Australian Academy of Technology and Engineering (ATSE) and the Industry Mentoring Networking in STEM (IMNIS) invites you to join us for Engaging with Industry Queensland
This event focuses on how, when and why researchers engage with industry, the importance of understanding commercialisation, milestones, timelines and budgets, developing strong professional connections beyond academia, as well as how developing an entrepreneurial mindset can facilitate resilience and success in any setting.
Keynote speaker Dr Paulo Borges will provide insight into his time as Principal Research Scientist for CSIRO.
Following the Keynote presentation, a panel facilitated by Dr Kevin Koo, and including special guest panellists, Felicity Furey, Dr Sasikaran Kandasamy and Zoe Piper will share their experiences engaging with industry across all facets of the industry pipeline.

KEYNOTE SPEAKER
Principal Research Scientist CSIRO
Dr. Paulo Borges is a project, people and technical leader with 20 years of experience in Innovation, Robotics, Autonomous Systems, Artificial Intelligence, Industry 4.0 and Consulting.
He is a Principal Research Scientist and Robotics Perception Team Leader in the Robotics and Autonomous Systems Group in CSIRO (Brisbane, Australia) leading a large team of robotics and AI experts. CSIRO is Australia’s National Science and Innovation Agency and with more than 100 years of history it is one of the largest and most diverse applied research organisations in the world.
He has a PhD in Electronic Engineering from Queen Mary, University of London, completed in 2007. Paulo has lived and worked in 5 different countries (USA, Brazil, UK, Switzerland, and Australia), and before his current role he had worked at ETH Zürich, Queen Mary, University of London, Federal University of Santa Catarina, and University of Manchester.
He is a recipient of the Endeavour Executive Award and of a Winston Churchill Fellowship, for which he will undertake a visiting position at the NASA Ames Research Center in the Silicon Valley in 2022.
In the last several years his core experience has been in autonomous robot solutions for the manufacturing, energy, and agriculture industries, aiming at high TRL and close connections between industry, innovation and research.

Head of Assay Development XING Technologies Pty Ltd
Kevin Koo is a nanobiotechnologist focused on the development, translation and commercialisation of molecular diagnostics for precision disease management. He is the Head of Assay Development at XING Technologies, a Brisbane-based biotech company specialising in transformative diagnosis and monitoring technologies for personalised healthcare. In his role, Kevin oversees the execution of product development programs and deliverables with both internal and external stakeholders.
Prior to joining XING in 2018, he completed his doctoral research on the development of nanobiosensors for circulating prostate cancer biomarkers at the University of Queensland‘s Australian Institute for Bioengineering & Nanotechnology. In recognition, Kevin has received the Dean’s Award for Outstanding Thesis, the Springer Thesis Award, and the Metrohm Australia-New Zealand Young Chemist Award. He remains an appointed Honorary Fellow of the University of Queensland Centre for Clinical Research.
